Animal Essays

When writing an English essay, there’s a multitude of different ways to go about the content in the paper, as well as the actual structure of the text. Since there’s no absolute “correct” way to write an essay of choice, grasping the reader’s attention plays a huge role in how successful the piece of writing may turn out to be. Gopnik and Kingsolver both wrote two incredible, very different essays “Dog Story” and “Making Peace,” respectively, with striking features, but the content, structure, and meaning contained both many similarities and differences that made them work as complete, successful writings.

Gopnik and Kingsolver both used many features in their writing’s, but the one that stuck out the most was comparisons by the use of metaphors and similes used by both, however, more so by Gopnik. Gopnik tied many of his comparisons within the text, making them harder to identify, but still making vivid images, while Kingsolver provided a few comparisons, using less metaphors and vivid images. The most vivid simile provided by Kingsolver appeared towards the end of the text describing thoughts on human societies, comparing to animal relations.

More features used in both essays included the audience, complexity of the text, as well as the precision in each written essay. Gopnik and Kingsolver both wrote in a conversational, informal manner, as any audience could appreciate the particular animal essays. While both texts contained complexity, Kingsolver’s essay seemed much more complex, with many more ideas, rather than just stories, flashbacks, and evidence of evolution. The feature of precision must be very important, as it will make a huge effect on whether or not the information is reliable or not in the reader’s mind. Both essays contained great precision, as they backed up any idea or theory with evidence from particular scientists, or another reliable source.

The features used by both authors allowed the story to elevate into a well-rounded, reliable, and visual essay. Each feature used actually enhanced the essays in different manners, while the important feature in both was that which maintained reliability. Interestingly, Gopnik and Kingsolver provided a huge difference in content, when Gopnik focused on a particular relationship with a dog, or domesticated animal, while Kingsolver focused on a relationship with wild animals. Through the great difference, evidence was provided that relationships do actually follow the same trend in a few ways, while they also differ. The features added together in a different manner created structure by which the author chose to create the story.

Although features in an essay are important, the structure of an essay must be plausible as well. When terms of structure arise, both stories by Gopnik and Kingsolver contained similarities, with a few differences between the two. The main similarity of both essays was the detailed incorporation of stories. Gopnik grabbed the reader’s attention right away, providing a flashback of him and his wife giving in, buying their daughter her very first puppy, with reluctance. He then went to discuss the thoughts he had before and after buying the puppy, as well as many of the adventures the family underwent during a time with huge adjustment. After many adventures, Gopnik broke down into Darwinism, biological evidence, and evolution theories about human nature, dogs specifically. While Gopnik started by grabbing the reader’s attention, Kingsolver began with a story evolving into the realization of animal territorial diversity when compared to humans. After the realization, Kingsolver provided evidence to many different evolution beliefs, and reasons as to why animals perform the way they do. Structurally, Kingsolver seemed to remain on the same topic as the original problem, whereas, Gopnik strays from the original story, creating ideas of dog evolution. Kingsolver structurally arranged the paper straight forward, to the point, while Gopnik deterred from the original thoughts many times, but still appropriately resolved all ideas and thoughts.

In conclusion, the many different features that both writers used in their papers developed insightful, clear, and meaningful essays. The main similarity, comparisons made in both essays, by use of metaphors and similes created vivid images, as well as understanding, of the exact message the writer was trying to pursue. Although both writers provided the essays with comparisons, the setup, or structure of each essay was of utmost difference.

Creation Controversy

Heated arguments, questions, and new suggestions arise when one spark of how the Earth was created emerges. Due to the lack of technology and documentation around the time period the Earth was actually created, many of the stories about creation cause great controversy. Controversy is caused primarily based on the fact that no sure documentation was recorded, as well as different opinions and beliefs between cultures. Two well-known stories of creation, the Biblical and Native American stories contain many similarities, as well as many differences in the way they believe creation occurred. Though there are few similarities, the differences greatly outweigh them, as most ideas are based on different beliefs.

Both the Native American and Biblical creation stories both seem to be written throughout a long period of time, with many different interpretations. The Native American story line suggests many different tribes stating their beliefs on creation, as well as telling an interesting story about how they believe creation arose. The Biblical creation story line seems more credible, based on the many different modifications, translations, and based on the writing technique. Although both stories are straight forward on how they believe creation occurred, the text still leaves room for the interpreter to establish their own opinion.

In the beginning times, the Earth was filled with darkness, by which creation had to spark light into the world. Both the Biblical and Native American perspectives agreed that darkness was the main theme in creation and brought forth life (1). Not only was darkness a main theme, lightness was as well. Both stories highly praised light, and thought it was of utmost importance. Although light darkness was a similar characteristic in both stories, how the light was sprung forth differed. The Biblical story contained information that God simply spoke lightness into the Earth, creating day and night (1). Although light wasn’t spoken into the world in the Native American version of the story, it was brought into the world by the hot ball, the sun, which was extremely hard to take, steal, or “borrow,” as told by many of the different Native American Tribes (2). Lightness was a huge accomplishment, and even happiness for both creation lines.

In both the Biblical and Native American stories of creation, animals played a huge factor in how the world evolved. In the well-known Biblical story, God created beautiful creatures, animals, for the people to use in a necessary manner, suggesting human kind was higher than animals (1). Meanwhile, in the Native American story, an Eagle and Coyote, both wild animals, were first roaming the Earth that only contained water with a small piece of land (2). The message portrayed by the Native Americans placed the animals at a higher level than mankind was placed, suggesting that humans weren’t as important, or as well developed.

Another striking difference in both story scenarios was the evolution of creation. In Biblical views, God created everything from light, humans, plants, animals, and seasons all the way to temptations, good and evil (1). To contrast the belief of one almighty creator, Native American’s believed that Coyote and Eagle evolved the Earth, making humans, seasons, and so on (2). This main difference brings fort the different creator beliefs, as well as the level of control in creation. In the Biblical version, there was no major form of competition, as God was creator, the way, the truth, and the life (1). However, the Native American stories tell otherwise, giving hints where competition occurred between the Coyote, Eagle, Monster, and Chief’s (2).

Since no witnesses of the events that occurred during creation are still alive today, it keeps many different religions believing what they were raised to believe, or what they believe is true based on their own findings. In just the Native American and Biblical creation stories alone, many differences are noted, along with few similarities. That goes to show that the discrepancy between creation beliefs will be on going, as people will continue to believe what they want no matter the case.

The Once in a Lifetime Relationship

The ability to maintain and grow a relationship with animals can be a beautiful advantage in everyday life. A relationship can be positive or negative, and contain many different emotional levels in between. Similar to a typical relationship with human beings, animals can and will change a person’s heart. Simply looking into an animal’s eyes screams patience, love, and friendliness.

My love for animals began early in life, due to the reality of growing up in the country plains with horses roaming alongside many dogs, cats, cows, chickens, and goats. My first dog, Frank, showed my entire family the true meaning of unconditional love, as well as forced me to come to the conclusion that my dog was my best friend in the entire world. He grew on me, following me everywhere no matter the conditions. If I jumped in our swimming pool, Frank was right behind me, making sure I wasn’t going to drown. Since he was my best friend, I had no uncertainty in my mind that a relationship with an animal couldn’t be compared and as strong as a relationship with another human. The relationship between Frank and I was trusting, loving, and perpetual.

Throughout my youth years, I also underwent many circumstances where I formed strong relationships with animals that I owned. My mom always loved horses and stayed outside in the barn with the horses each day after work, making me question what made her want to stay out there longer than to just feed. I later understood that she had an unbreakable bond, a strong relationship with the horses. As soon as I was age eligible, I joined the Collin County 4H club in Texas, and my mom signed me up for horse shows, as well as the occasional “playday” competition. I owned (and still own) a very special horse, with an extremely typical name, Red. Although his name was typical, he was every bit of extraordinary. This plain red horse took care of me at a young age, and he is one of the main reasons that I discovered that relationships with animals are an amazing experience, and that I indeed grow strong relationships with animals.

When I first started competing on Red, I would become embarrassed when he decided to bite my toe around each barrel turn, grabbing all the fans attention. Although this behavior was dreaded, I came out of the arena with the biggest smile on my face, because I didn’t care about winning, only about having fun with my horse, growing our strong bond. After years of competition, Red took me to 4H state in barrels and poles, as well as won the playday series, and multiple rodeos. To this day, Red lives in Texas with my parents, where he will forever receive top care; he’s a member of the family.

Relationships with an animal are extremely important to many people, as it can change someone’s perspective on life in general. Frank taught me a great multitude about relationships, and all of my experiences with Red later ensured that I have and will continue to grow amazing relationships with animals, especially dogs and horses.
